Apollo Bay Surf Life Saving Club is excited to be trialing Youth Salties for the first time this summer as part of a new program being introduced by Life Saving Victoria (LSV).

Youth Salties has been developed for young members aged 13-17 years, providing another way for young people to connect with their Club, meet other members, build confidence and explore the different opportunities available through surf lifesaving.

For Apollo Bay, this is our first Youth Salties program, and we’re looking forward to seeing how it works for our members and how we can build on it in future years.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I do SRC, Bronze Medallion and Youth Salties?

Yes! Youth Salties is designed to complement the Club’s existing training programs rather than replace them.

If you’re completing your SRC, Bronze Medallion or another Club training program, you’re welcome to express your interest.

As this is a small trial program, if we receive more expressions of interest than places available, we may prioritise young members who don’t already have access to another age-appropriate development or training opportunity during the season.

Does Youth Salties replace Nippers?

No. Youth Salties is completely independent of the Nippers program.

The sessions will generally run around similar times to Nippers, but Youth Salties is a separate program with its own activities, facilitators and program structure.

For members who are interested in getting involved with Nippers beyond their Youth Salties session, we’d also encourage them to jump across and assist with water safety once their session has concluded, where appropriate.

Do I need my SRC or Bronze Medallion to participate?

No. Youth Salties is open to 13–17-year-old Club members at different stages of their surf lifesaving journey.

One of the aims of the program is to help young members discover the different pathways available within the Club and encourage them to become involved in other opportunities as they become eligible.

Do I need to attend all eight sessions?

We encourage participants to attend as many sessions as possible to get the most out of the program, but we understand that the Christmas and New Year period can be busy.

Participants can indicate any existing commitments when completing the EOI.

Can I have a say in what we do?

Definitely! Youth Salties is about giving our younger members a voice within the Club.

Throughout the program, participants will have opportunities to share ideas, explore leadership roles and contribute to future youth activities at Apollo Bay SLSC.
